History of Upsilon Mu Omega

Upsilon Mu Omega Chapter was chartered March 29, 1997, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin by seventy-six charter members committed to “Service to All Mankind.” Upsilon Mu Omega decided it would be known for leadership and empowerment of women of "high scholastic and ethical standards.”

Sponsorship and partnership with other organizations in programs that promote the health and welfare of the community-at-large and the world community have been fulfilled throughout the Milwaukee Community through many activities:

Participation in UNCF Walk/Run

Hosting Boys to Men Conference

Participation in numerous Breast Cancer Awareness projects

Collecting blankets and toiletries for the homeless

Hosting our Annual AKA Family Fun Day

Collecting Coats and Food for families

Sponsoring AKA Money Camp for Kids in partnership with the Milwaukee Public Library

Donating school supplies to local youth

Sponsoring blood/marrow donation drives in the African-American community

Sponsoring various financial workshops for youth and adults

Hosting Dr. Martin Luther King Day of Service events

Serving as Poll Workers for the City of Milwaukee (Adopt-A-Poll)

Through pursuits of excellence in service and unity in the fellowship of sisterhood, Upsilon Mu Omega sorors have dedicated themselves to the ideals and tenets of Alpha Kappa Alpha.

History of Alpha Kappa Alpha

Honoring the Past

Founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by and for African American college-trained women. To trace its history is to tell a story of changing patterns of human relations in America in the 20th century.

The small group of women who organized the Sorority was conscious of a privileged position as college-trained women of color, just one generation removed from slavery. They were resolute that their college experiences should be as meaningful and productive as possible. Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded to apply that determination.

As the Sorority grew, it kept in balance two important themes: the importance of the individual and the strength of an organization of women of ability and courage. As the world became more complex, there was a need for associations which cut across racial, geographical, political, physical and social barriers.

Alpha Kappa Alpha’s influence extends beyond campus quads and student interest. It has a legacy of service that deepens, rather than ends, with college graduation.

The goals of its program activities center on significant issues in families, communities, government halls and world assembly chambers. Its efforts constitute a priceless part of the global experience in the 21st century.

Diamond Jubilee Pearls Foundation

The Diamond Jubilee Pearls Foundation of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Upsilon Mu Omega chapter is a 501 (c) (3) organization, established to provide high school and college scholarships to students in the city of Milwaukee. In addition to awarding scholarships the foundation also financial supports all the community service projects sponsored by Upsilon Mu Omega Chapter: AKA Money Camp, Family Fun Day, MLK Day of Service, Boys to Men Conference and numerous other service projects.

The foundation hosts two major fundraisers annually: The Miss Fashionetta Presentation and the Tribute to Women Leaders Luncheon. The funds raised from these events make it possible for Upsilon Mu Omega Chapter to sponsor various community service projects at no cost to families in the city of Milwaukee. Tax deductible contributions can be made to support these educational activities and the DJP scholarship fund. Donations can be made payable to the Diamond Jubilee Pearls Foundation and mailed to:
